A brisk 10 minute walk every day can make a big difference to your health. Start with 10 minutes and see if you can gradually build up to more.
A new free app has been launched to help people in Hull get fitter by building walking into their daily life. The message from Public Health England's One You campaign is that just ten minutes of brisk walking is enough to make a difference, and all the moving you do adds up. With so much happening in Hull this year, there are more opportunities than ever to fit in your ten minutes and see something fantastic at the same time. Walking from Paragon Station to Queen Victoria Square to see the latest art installation; head from Queen's Gardens down to Humber Street to explore shops, galleries and restaurants; go from the marina to Ferens art gallery or just take in the redeveloped city centre. If it's raining, you can head inside and get your ten minutes in one of Hull's shopping centres; it all counts. Outside the city centre, walk the kids to school, walk the dog, walk round the garden; everything adds up. The free app adds up all your periods of activity, letting you measure how much you're doing, set goals and see progress. It also provides information on all the ways walking can improve your health, including fitness, mood, and risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
