Fire safety for council tenants and leaseholders

Reduce the risk of fires in your home by taking some simple steps - 

  • test your smoke alarm weekly
  • if your smoke alarm is faulty report it by telephoning 01482 300 300
  • keep door and window keys where everyone can find them
  • do not leave candles unattended
  • always put out cigarettes properly
  • never smoke in bed
  • correctly store vaping devices when not in use
  • do not leave washing machines or tumble dryers on when you are asleep or not at home
  • only use correct charging devices as specified and recommended by the manufacturer
  • do not leave charging devices or plug in air fresheners unattended
  • plan an escape route
  • never use appliances with cracked plugs or worn cables
  • do not overload electrical sockets
  • never leave cooking unattended
  • make sure exits are kept clear
  • close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading
  • avoid storing paraffin heaters, gas bottles or petroleum products in the home
  • ensure communal areas in flats are kept clear at all times
  • do not have barbeques or open fires next to fences or near windows, doors or sheds

All existing residents in high rise blocks have been told about what to do if a fire breaks out in their home or in a communal area and new tenants are given the same information at sign up.
