Citizenship Ceremonies

A Citizenship Ceremony celebrates the significance and responsibility of becoming a British Citizen. It is to welcome our newest citizens into our community.

Following a successful application to become a British Citizen, the Home Office issues an invitation letter to the individual concerned. This advises them of whom they should contact to arrange their ceremony.

Contact must be made with the Register Office specified in your invitation letter within 14 days of the receipt of the letter. A ceremony must be attended within 3 months.

During the ceremony citizens will swear or affirm an oath to the Sovereign and will make the pledge of Citizenship. The certificate of British Citizenship is presented at the ceremony by the guest of honour (where able to attend).

Children under 18 who have applied with their parents for citizenship can attend the ceremony. They do not have to take the oath or pledge, but they can receive their certificate as part of the ceremony.

The fee which you pay to the Home Office when applying for citizenship includes the cost of the ceremony, which is held in groups to reinforce the community nature of citizenship.

Personal ceremonies are available, but there will be extra costs for these.
