Smoke Control Area

We are proposing to revoke the 25 existing Smoke Control Orders and replacing them with a single, clearer Smoke Control Order covering the whole of the Authority.

The main reason for consolidating them is that the existing Orders were made over several decades, and create uncertainty as they are not consistent with each other

The legal situation will remain the same, which generally means that only authorised fuels and/or exempt appliances can be used within the City boundaries.

Hull is a Smoke Control Area

It is illegal to emit smoke from a chimney of a building unless you use -

  • a government approved appliance together with the manufacturers permitted fuel or
  • smokeless fuel

Visit Defra for a list of approved appliances

Exemptions

There are a few exemptions within the Smoke Control area.
