Hygiene waste and sharps collection

We undertake regular weekly collection or a one-off on demand service from businesses. This service is chargeable.

The businesses required to pay for this service include –

  • schools
  • shops
  • factories
  • offices
  • residential
  • nursing
  • children’s homes
  • hostels
  • landlords
  • all business properties

Containers

Clinical waste other than sharps will only be collected if contained in a yellow sack with a black stripe. Bags used must be approved to UN3291 standard.

The service provided is a bag only service. Bins will not be provided to store bags between collections.

Presentation of hygiene waste

  • bags should be sealed and tied ready for collection. They should be no more than three-quarters full
  • bags should weigh no more than 5kg each
  • sharps boxes should be locked shut before collection. They should not be filled above the line indicated
  • never place a sealed sharps box inside a bag for collection
  • never put syringes, needles or sharps into a bag for collection.

Collection point

Collection will be from within the boundary of the property or premise. The exact collection arrangements will be agreed with you. The waste must be accessible at the time of collection. If access cannot be gained and the operative cannot contact you, the operative will return on the next scheduled collection day to attempt to make a collection.

Additional sacks and containers

You can buy yellow sacks and sharps boxes from Waste Management for an extra fee - 

  • one roll of 200 sacks - £42.11
  • one small sharps box - £6.63
  • one large sharps box - £12.16

Loose needles

Loose needles at any of the following would not be collected -

  • a commercial premise
  • schools
  • residential or nursing homes
  • a house reported by a landlord
  • any other business premises
    • office
    • shop

The site would need to buy a sharps box, place the needles into the box, and seal the box before a collection will be offered at a charge.

Hygiene waste and sharps - Missed collections

In the event of a missed collection, collection will be made the next working day.

Following receipt of an enquiry, the Commercial Waste team will contact the customer. This is to confirm the price of removal and arrange for the completion of the agreement and consignment note.
