Course Information

Aims: 

  • Understand the importance of oral health and the potential effect on general health, wellbeing, and dignity
  • The importance of regular mouth care according to the resident's individual needs.
  • Are aware of the potential impact of untreated dental pain or mouth infections on individuals' behaviour, and general health and wellbeing. Particularly for people who cannot articulate their pain or distress or ask for help for example residents with dementia  or who have difficulties communicating.
  • Know how to deliver daily mouth care
  • Know how and when to reassess oral health
  • Understand the importance of denture marking

Objectives:

  • Have acquired sufficient knowledge to improve oral health of the people in their care.
  • Can follow a mouthcare plan especially if an individual is unable to clean their own teeth, and be able to establish what the barriers are to delivering their oral health care needs
  • Understand and recognize the methods of prevention of poor oral health
  • Help provide mouthcare for natural teeth and denture care
  • Can recognize common oral health conditions and risk factors associated with oral cancer
  • Know when to escalate any concerns by informing a senior member of staff or the care home manager and know how to refer and gain access to a dentist for necessary treatment.
