Course Title Understanding Dementia
Course Information
  • To explore the nature and effects of dementia, and how to work more positively with people with dementia.

 

 

  • To understand what is meant by the term dementia and  its prevalence in the UK
  • To identify and recognise the types of dementia and  the different signs and symptoms
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the brain and its functions and the physical effects of dementia
  • To gain an understanding of the ‘unmet need’ and how to meet the needs of people with dementia
  •  To recognise signs of distress and be able to diffuse anxiety by understanding the person’s experience of dementia
  • To understand the persons need for ‘a past reality’ and how to meet these needs using Validation techniques
  • Demonstrate an understanding of complex communication needs and how to support those with a cognitive impairment
  • Awareness of the need to signpost to appropriate support groups and services
