Simpler Recycling

Say hello to your new bins! We’re introducing new waste management schemes in Hull. With just three clear categories, recycling is simple. Less waste, less hassle - more impact for our community and the environment.

From March 2026, recycling will be easier and more consistent across England. The new Simpler Recycling system means everyone, whether at home, work, or school, will be able to recycle the same materials.

Key changes include -

  • a core set of dry recyclables collected from all households, including flats and businesses
  • weekly food waste collections for all households, including flats
  • businesses and public buildings to separate food waste and recyclables from general waste

Timeline of changes

March 2025

All businesses with over 10 employees must now separate dry recycling, food waste, and general waste.

March 2026

All households, including flats, will receive weekly food waste collections, in addition to dry recycling collections.

March 2027

Plastic films and wrapping will be added to the blue bin recycling scheme. Smaller businesses must also comply by this date.

Flats recycling trial

The flats recycling trail will begin August 2025.

To prepare for the city-wide rollout of recycling and food waste collections, a 6 month trial will launch for over 500 flats across the city. The trial will test -

  • different bin types and collection frequencies
  • ways to reduce contamination
  • how to keep bin areas clean and tidy

Residents will be engaged throughout the trial to gather feedback and help shape the final service.

What you can expect

  • Weekly food waste collections using brown bins for homes with gardens and communal bins for flats
  • 5-litre food caddies for every flat and home
  • Expanded recycling to include plastic films and wrapping by 2027 in the blue bins

We will be running a city-wide communications campaign to keep you informed and help you recycle right.
