Fire safety in your flat

Escape routes

Fire Exit signThink in advance of what you would do if there were a fire in your flat or elsewhere in your building and you need to get out.

Find out where the fire exits are and practise walking the entire escape route regularly. You won't be able to use the lift if there is a fire, so choose an escape route that takes this into account.

It is easy to get confused in smoke, so it’s important to know how many doors you need to go through to reach the stairs.

Your own flat may have more than one escape route, for example doors leading to a different access corridor, or the use of a common balcony which leads to an escape route.

Talk through your ‘escape plan’ with everyone who lives in your home.

Always keep door or window keys nearby and make sure everyone knows where they are. A torch is also useful in case you need to get out at night.

If you know you will be unable to evacuate from the building without using the lift, contact the High Rise Team on 01482 616 108, or the call centre on 01482 300 300.

Humberside fire and Rescue service offer free home fire safety visits and can provide advice and recommendations on escape routes. You can find out more or book a visit using the Humber fire and rescue website.

Evacuation strategiesGet Out, Stay Out, Call 999

All the council-owned flats in Hull currently operate a stay put policy, if this changes, we will notify you accordingly. If there is a fire elsewhere in the building, you are usually safest in your own flat, unless heat or smoke is affecting you. If you are affected, you should get out, stay out and call 999.

If there’s a fire in your home, you and the rest of your family or occupants should leave immediately closing all doors behind you and call 999 as soon as possible.
