Standing as a candidate at local elections

You may be eligible to stand for election as -

  • a local Hull councillor
  • a member of a political party
  • an independent candidate

To be able to stand as a candidate in local elections you must be -

  • aged 18 or older
  • a British citizen
  • an eligible commonwealth citizen
  • a citizen of any member state of the European Union

and meet one or more of the following qualifications -

  • you are, and continue to be, registered as a local government elector in Hull from the day of your nomination onwards
  • you have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in Hull during the whole 12 months before the day of your nomination. And on the day of election
  • your main or only place of work during the 12 months prior to the day of your nomination and the day of election has been in Hull
  • you have lived in Hull during the whole of the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election

Apart from meeting the qualifications for standing for election, you must also not be disqualified. You cannot be a candidate if at the time of your nomination and on polling day -

  • you are employed by the local authority or hold a paid office under the authority. This includes joint boards or committees
  • you hold a politically restricted post
  • you are subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order
  • you are the mayor for a combined authority area that the local authority is a part of
  • you have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 3 months or more without the option of a fine. This is during the 5 years before polling day. This includes a suspended sentence
