Annual Status Reports (ASRs)
As our part in the National Air Quality Strategy, we review and assess air quality across the City. We submit the results as Annual Status Reports for appraisal. This is done by independent experts contracted by Defra.
Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA)
As of 3 June 2026, we have revoked the AQMA covering the area around the underpass works and surrounding area through the centre of Hull that had been in place since 2005 due to poor air quality.
Improvements in air quality over 5 years mean we are now in a position to remove this management area and have notified the Secretary of State and DEFRA.
Smoke Control
We are in the process of consolidating the 25 existing Smoke Control Orders into one single order for the whole of the Authority. Smoke from -
- bonfires
- barbeques
- chimineas
is not covered by the Smoke Control Orders and is dealt with under nuisance provisions. Emissions to atmosphere are also regulated by Environmental Permits.
