We are committed to building safer, stronger communities together. Hate has no place in our city.
Hate crimes
Hate crimes are any crimes that are targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that person’s -
- disability
- race or ethnicity
- religion or belief
- sexual orientation
- transgender identity
It can take many forms, including physical assault, verbal abuse, or incitement to hatred. You don’t have to be a member of the targeted group to be a victim. Hate crimes affect individuals, families, and the wider community.
Hate incidents
A hate incident is any act that is perceived by the victim or others to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, but may not meet the threshold of a criminal offence.
Examples include -
- name-calling or offensive jokes
- abusive gestures
- social media abuse
- disputes between neighbours
While not always criminal, hate incidents can escalate and cause significant harm and tension in our communities. That’s why Hull City Council, in partnership with Humberside Police, takes all reports seriously.
