Apply for a dog breeding licence

Anyone who breeds 3 or more litters a year, or anyone breeding dogs and advertising a business of selling them regardless of the number of litters produced must hold a valid licence. This licence may set out a number of conditions to secure the wellbeing of the animals.

Application process

  • complete an application form
  • provide a copy of your current liability insurance certificate
  • provide relevant, requested policies and procedures

Once an application has been received, a council officer will arrange to inspect the premises to ensure its suitability.

For the first inspection, a council appointed veterinary surgeon will also inspect the premises. The applicant will be responsible for the cost of this.

Following a successful inspection and payment, a star rating will be given determining the length of licence granted.
