Queen Victoria Square Fountains

The fountains in Queen Victoria Square are now back in operation.

However, the compressor is nearing the end of its service life and will need replacing within the next year.

To minimise disruption, the council plans to carry out this work during the winter shutdown. However, if the issue becomes urgent or poses a risk to public safety, we will act sooner.

As part of ongoing improvements to the area, three benches closest to the fountains have been temporarily removed for refurbishment. This work aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming public space. The redesigned benches will help -

  • reduce litter
  • discourage bird feeding
  • protect the water quality of the fountains

The benches are currently in secure storage, where local contractors Fairburns are carrying out design adaptations. These include improved airflow beneath the seating to prevent waste build-up.

In addition to the bench upgrades we are also working with pest control officers to develop a long-term strategy for managing birds in the area.

This approach builds on the success of the recent Whitefriargate scheme, where refurbished benches were reinstated to enhance the public realm.
