Early years education and providers

Early years education

3 and 4-year-old early education funding

All 3 and 4 year-olds are eligible for 15 hours per week of early education funding, up to a maximum of 570 hours per year. This is from the term after their child's third birthday.

Children born between -

  • 1st January and 31st March - eligible from 1 April summer term
  • 1st April and 31st August - eligible from 1 September autumn term
  • 1 September and 31 December - eligible from 1 January spring term

You do not need to apply. You just need to contact your chosen nursery or childminder to arrange your place. Some providers will allow you to ‘stretch’ the hours over 52 weeks, using fewer hours per week. You can also split the time between 2 providers if this helps you.

Where to access early education places

Early education funding can be accessed from a range of providers across the city, including -

  • childminder
  • day nurseries
  • pre-schools
  • primary school nurseries
