Help for abusers of domestic violence

If you have been violent or abusive to your partner, you can get help from Strength to Change to stop domestic violence. Contact Strength to Change in confidence on 01482 613 403.

It can be difficult to come to terms with your abusive behaviour and to ask for help. Strength to Change helps men find the strength to stop domestic violence. At Strength to Change you will be treated with respect and understanding, and you will be provided with the help and support you need to make change happen - it requires commitment and determination from you.

Monday to Thursday 10am - 1pm

Confidentiality policy

Calls to the Strength for Change service are confidential. They do not use technology to identify callers, listen in or call recording equipment. There is an answer machine for out of hour's calls so leave a message and someone will call you back.

Strength to Change

The Strength to Change service is for men who are concerned about their violence and abuse in their intimate relationships. This is an initiative aimed primarily at enhancing the safety of women and children whilst giving men an opportunity to change their behaviour.

People who can contact Strength to change

  • men who are violent or abusive towards their partners and are concerned about their own behaviour
  • professionals who come into contact with men who are perpetrating domestic violence and want advice
  • domestic violence victims, friends and family members wanting to find out what help is available for perpetrators

Help Strength to Change can offer professionals

  • advice and best practice about working with clients who disclose using domestic violence or abuse
  • explain how our programme works, what's involved and how our approach is not anger management

Help Strength to Change for individual men

One phone call will not bring lasting behaviour change in an individual however contacting the service is the first step to - 

  • encouraging and motivating them to stop their violence and abuse
  • help them understand how their behaviour affects their family
  • tell them about our service and offer an initial assessment

Other methods of help Strength to Change offer

The Strength to Change service welcomes calls from partners or ex partners, friends and relatives who are concerned about a perpetrator. The safety of those at risk - usually women and children is the priority. They will - 

  • give callers details about the service
  • explain who they are, how their programme works, how a man can access the services and explain that anger management is not an issue
  • encourage partners, ex partners, friends and relative to have realistic expectations about the likelihood of perpetrators changing their behaviour
  • explain about the family practitioner service specifically aimed at partners and children of men who are on our programme

Strength to Change does not provide - 

  • over the phone counselling or crisis intervention
  • couple counselling
  • a drop in service, strictly appointments only

The Strength to Change programme takes approximately 52 weeks to complete.
