Carer’s Council Tax discount

You may be able to get a carer’s council tax discount if you are -

  • living with and caring for someone
  • the person you care for must be entitled to certain benefits as specified on the application form
  • the person you care for must not be your spouse, partner or child under 18
  • you must be providing care for at least 35 hours a week on average

You will need to provide proof of the benefit entitlement such as an award letter. You can take a picture of the document and upload it. Documents can only be sent in JPEG or PNG.

Alternatively, you may qualify if you are -

  • employed as a carer
  • living in accommodation provided by the employer so that the care can be given
  • employed to provide care for at least 24 hours a week
  • paid no more than £44 a week

Exemptions also apply when a property is empty because the occupier is in residential care or receiving care elsewhere, and when your property is empty because you are proving care for someone elsewhere.

Claims normally take around 6 to 8 weeks to process.
