Fire safety in flats

Escape route

Think in advance of what you would do if there were a fire in your flat or elsewhere in your building and you need to get out.

  • find out where the fire exits are
  • it is easy to get confused in smoke, so it’s important to know how many doors you need to go through to reach the stairs
  • your own flat may have more than one escape route, for example, doors leading to a different access corridor, or the use of a common balcony which leads to an escape route
  • talk through your ‘escape plan’ with everyone who lives in your home
  • if you know you will be unable to evacuate from the building without using the lift, contact the High Rise Team on 01482 616 108

You can arrange a home fire safety visit through the Humberside Fire & Rescue website.

  1. identify and be aware of the potential fire risks within your home
  2. know what to do to reduce or prevent the risk of fire
  3. put together an escape plan in case a fire does break out, and make sure you have working smoke alarms
