Designated Premises Supervisor

Role of the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)

All premises licensed for the sale of alcohol must have someone named as the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS). The DPS handles the sale of alcohol at the licensed premises. The DPS also acts as the main point of contact for any licensing, compliance or enforcement enquiries with the licensing or police authorities. The DPS must be a personal licence holder.

The DPS should be a person with enough authority to control and direct activities at the licensed premises. This is the person who has day-to-day responsibility for running the premises. The DPS could also be the premises licence holder.

How to appoint a Designated Premises Supervisor

You must provide details of the DPS when you apply for a premises licence allowing the sale of alcohol. A premises licence can only name one DPS, but a DPS can be named on more than one premises licence. The proposed DPS must provide a written consent form to accept this responsibility when applying for a premises licence.

Change the Designated Premises Supervisor

If you need to change your DPS, you must submit an application to vary the DPS on your premises licence. The proposed DPS must complete and sign a written consent form to accept this responsibility, as part of the application. A full copy of the application and any accompanying documents must be sent to the police. Should there be no representation to the application from the police, the application will be granted. The amended licence is then issued to you in due course.

Remove yourself as the Designated Premises Supervisor

If you are the current licensed premises DPS and you have decided to stop working at the premises, or you can no longer be the DPS and the licence holder has not made application to vary the DPS, you must make application to remove yourself and should notify the licence holder of your wish to be removed from the premises licence. Contact the Licensing Team to request the relevant application.
