Collecting food waste in your brown bin contributes to our overall recycling and composting performance which is a key aim within our Waste Strategy.
Only use the caddy liners provided by Hull City Council. The caddy liners we provide are free of charge and designed to break down quicker than those you can buy in the shops. The waste facility we send the brown bin waste to has a specific timeframe that materials need to break down in to produce compost for use in horticulture and agriculture.
Caddy liners are not bags, so may split if you carry them to your brown bin. When your caddy liner is full, make sure to tie the liner inside your kitchen caddy and tip this directly into your brown bin.
We do not accept
Do not put any cat or dog waste into the brown bin. This is because these animals eat meat, and this contaminates the compost.
More information on what can and can not be put in a caddy liner can be found on the brown bins and outdoor food waste caddy and kitchen caddy pages.
Simpler Recycling
We’re introducing new waste management schemes in Hull. With just three clear categories, recycling is simple. Less waste, less hassle - more impact for our community and the environment.
From March 2026, recycling will be easier and more consistent across England. The new Simpler Recycling system means everyone, whether at home, work, or school, will be able to recycle the same materials.
