Smell of gas or fumes

If you can smell gas in your home or suspect there is a gas escape or a carbon monoxide leak, you must telephone the gas emergency freephone number 0800 111 999 immediately. You should follow the instructions given. These include -

  • turning off the gas supply immediately at the meter or emergency control valve. The main gas on-off lever can be found next to your gas meter
  • extinguishing all sources of ignition
  • not smoking
  • not operating electrical light or power switches - either on or off
  • not using any phones inside the property
  • opening doors and windows to ventilate the property
  • ensuring access to the premise is possible
  • not operating any electrical security doors
  • leaving the property if the smell continues

If the entry to the property is through a communal access, make sure National Gas Emergency Services can gain access to the property without having to use the intercom.
