Winter weather

As temperatures drop over winter, it is important to prepare to keep safe and warm. You can find useful information about the weather, advice on staying healthy and warm, road safety and more on the Met Office website. They also provide guidance for coping with severe weather conditions.

The Warm Homes Team provide an impartial fuel poverty advice service for householders in Hull. This is aimed at helping households to reduce the costs of keeping warm and well at home.

Repairs

It is important to understand how your central heating system works. Keep it serviced throughout the year. You can learn more about how to do this through our central heating advice page.

If your council property is damaged due to bad weather, you can report a repair.  

Bin collections

Keep an eye on your bin collection days here, check your bin collection day. While you’re here, you can also subscribe to receive bin reminders via email.

If we can't collect your bins because of the bad weather -

  • put your bins out for collection on the scheduled days
  • if they are not collected, leave them out. They will be collected as soon as it is safe to do so. Saturdays and Sundays may also be used to catch up on collections where possible

Travel

You can keep up to date on the Travel Hull website.

Also, you can get service updates for both East Yorkshire Motoring Service (EYMS) and Stagecoach buses. They will be updated with any cancellations due to the bad weather.

Live service updates for Hull Trains, TransPennine Express and Northern Rail services. These all travel out of Hull Paragon Interchange.

Flooding

The bad winter weather can, on occasion, cause flooding in the Hull area. You can get information along with how to request sandbags through our flooding page.

Gritting

We are on standby 24 hours a day to grit roads and pavements when temperatures begin to plummet. You can find out more about which roads we grit and our gritting routes on our gritting and travel page. We also have help and information on grit bins and gritting paths yourself. Here you can request a grit bin near you or ask for an existing one to be serviced
