Victoria Pier

Victoria pier

Victoria Pier is a public asset of historical importance and is regarded as one of Hull’ s most notable maritime structures.

The pier is located on the North banks of the Humber Estuary and can be accessed by pedestrians via Nelson Street.

The structure is composed of timber deck sections supported on timber columns.

A further steel structure named The Admiralty Steps is adjoined to the South elevation of the pier and provides pedestrian access to vessels users (including the Police). The steps are composed of galvanised steel, steps, deck grilles supported on steel columns and beams.

In June 2022, structural monitoring and detailed inspections showed that Victoria Pier was in very poor condition, with a number of defects identified including localised rotting in most sections. Therefore, we needed to close the pier to maintain public safety.

Currently, due to the safety concerns around its stability, we are developing a scheme to make the structure safe. This will involve consultation with stakeholders.

Following the initial scheme of works, we will then consider the options for its replacement.

In the meantime, the structure is routinely monitored to ensure that it remains stable and does not pose a risk to the public and users of the Humber Estuary or River Hull.

Details of the scheme, including exact timeframes, will be announced on this page, and on Hull CC News.

We understand that the closure of the pier causes disruption to those that would like to enjoy it, and we’re striving to find a suitable means of replacing it as quickly as we can.

Our work isn’t always visible. We may be carrying out scheme development, design work or undertaking statutory consultations in preparation for the works. When on-site, we may be conducting inspections and repairs underneath the pier’s surface.
